Pin Oak leaves are kind of the opposite of Live Oak leaves…by that I mean they don’t look very tropical, and they are soft and break down within three or four months if kept damp. However they offer a lot of hide spots for juvenile frogs, and are much more quickly accessible to isopods and springtails, in terms of being food.

I’ve been using these Pin Oak leaves for the past 30 years in my juvenile dart frog grow out tubs, they are perfect for this purpose!  I setup my tubs with some ABG or locally sourced mulch, and a handful of these leaves. I soak the leaves in water for a bit before I put them in the frogs container to help soften them up and make them more attractive to the frogs.
