Marcgravia Umbellata “Red”

Price range: $18.00 through $28.00

Marcgravia umbellata “Red” is a fast and fairly easy growing smaller vine.  In fact, once established you will need to be watchful and occasionally give it a good pruning to keep it from over running your tank!  Emerging leaves are a lovely red coloration.  Like most any Marcgravia, this plant readily shingles, in fact it’s pretty much it’s default mode!

Marcgravia species grow throughout the New World tropics. There are many species and forms of the plant, and it is commonly found in appropriate habitat.  It typically grows in rainforest environments, and typically grows up trees.  Once it reaches the canopy lighting, it changes form into the larger leaved adult form.

Generally in the terrarium these plants maintain their smaller leaf form, with a few exceptions.  These plants are often sold as cuttings, and can be challenging to establish, although there are exceptions, of which this red umbellata is one.  Cuttings should be placed on a substrate of moist long fiber spaghnum in a highly humid location.  Until established, lay it flat and keep it in lower light.  Once it is rooted, you can move it to a more well lit and upright location.

Please select either the potted version or cutting (if offered) below.  Then select your bundle, or shipping method.  Unless you are also ordering frogs or geckos,  you will select the Terrarium Plant Bundle, which will give you the option to choose as many (eligible) plants or cuttings as you like, and have them all shipped for one flat rate of $22 for FedEx 2nd Day.  If you would like to have your plants shipped with your live animal order, please see the information below about this!

Please select a Live Animal Bundle Shipping Option to designate whether you are ordering 1-3 plants, or 4 or more plants to be shipped with your live animal order. Feel free to select “Shipping Previously Selected” even if you haven’t selected it yet, if you are not sure how many plants you are going to add to your order. Just be sure to toggle one option or the other on your final plant selection, before you check out!

Plant Shipping Tips and Guarantees

First, if you are willing to make the effort to follow my suggestions for receiving your plants in good condition, I’ll generally replace plants that arrive dead, although I’ll expect you to pay shipping for the replacement order.  The costs of replacement shipping are generally not covered in our guarantees. Our remedy for most live arrival issues is replacement of the product.

Second, unlike fruit flies, which I generally ship regardless of my concerns, I assume you will want me to hold your plant order until I feel there is a reasonable chance for the order to arrive safely.  I will be in touch by email to discuss this.  When conditions are moderate, I’ll ship plant orders immediately. During the winter, I will check the weather at your location as well as nationally, over the expected path that your shipment will take.  We will use heat packs as needed, with no additional costs. In the event that we think additional steps need to be taken to assure safe delivery, we will be in touch.  I do recommend that if the weather is questionable on your end, either too cold, below mid thirties at night, or too hot, above 85 during the day, you should have your package held for pickup.  No replacements will be made if you haven’t taken this step.
