This compact Philodendron is prized for its striking contrast of deep green foliage and vivid red petioles, creating a dramatic visual effect in a terrarium. Though considered a slow grower, it is fairly robust once established and makes an excellent focal point when allowed to ramble along the front of the enclosure.

Originally found in the lowland forests of Peru, this species has adapted well to terrarium culture. The leaves are typically about 2 inches long, thick and leathery in texture, giving the plant a sturdy presence despite its smaller size. Growth tends to be steady rather than rapid, and I’ve found that it puts out a new leaf every three or four weeks, once the plant has settled in.

“Darkside” prefers moderate lighting conditions, and if new leaves appear lighter than the mature ones, it may be an indication that the plant is receiving too much light. Under the right balance, the characteristic dark leaf coloration remains rich and consistent, while the red petioles stand out beautifully against the greenery of the terrarium. Easy to maintain and striking in appearance, this is one of the more desirable small philodendrons introduced to the hobby in recent years.
