These tiny beauties are one of the nicest thumbnail frogs, based on several characteristics that I measure a dart frog by. First is a striking appearance, and these have that in good measure, with bright metallic oranges on their head and body, and lovely blue netting on the legs. Others are flashier, but how much is it worth to have the most beautiful frog if you rarely see it? So that is another of my metrics, I want to be able to see my dart frogs, and while, as a thumbnail frog, their visibility is automatically limited due to their smaller size, these frogs are out and about, especially if you are regularly in the room with them moving about.
One thing that is critical with thumbnail frogs, if you want to see them, is that the tank needs to be very high humidity. It’s fine to let things dry out a bit, but you can expect your frogs to hide, and any breeding to come to stop when the tank dries out. Another key difference between these tiny frogs and the larger dart frogs is that they really like to be able to eat daily. You can feed your larger frogs, as adults, every two or three days and they can get fat on that kind of feeding schedule if you feed them enough, but thumbnails are more reliant on being able to peck at food every day. Not so say that the world will end if you miss a couple of days, but the regular schedule of feeding five or six days a week is a key factor in keeping them in good shape. Overall, these frogs are relatively easy to keep, just keep them wet and well fed!
