Ameerega Bilinguis Juveniles

$225.00

Ameerega bilinguis (Understory line, Peru) are colorful smaller dart frogs that are primarily terrestrial in habit.  They do well in small groups, and have a lovely call that is easily heard but not too loud.  They are somewhat shy, but creating a terrarium that has the right amount of cover will help to make them more visible. I’d suggest an 18 by 18 by 24 for a group of three or four frogs, or potentially something like a 30 long tank. However larger tanks would be even better, these frogs enjoy being able to have their own spots in the tank.

Entertaining frogs with lovely granulated red backs, and lots of other coloration details, like yellow flash-marks and blue mottling on the flanks.

Status- These frogs seem to call a lot but have been less generous with eggs. That being said we are getting a few tadpoles out of our group and hope to have some available by the end of the year or early 2026

The Ameerega complex of dart frog species can be found throughout rainforests in Ecuador, Peru and Columbia.  These frogs are characterized by their granulated backs, and soft colors, typically greens, yellows and blues.  Many are larger dart frogs, however there are quite a few small species, like these Ameerega bilinguis.  These frogs have been brought into the US by a couple of organizations, Tesoros and Under Story Enterprises (which is the source of our stock), and it’s really great to get access to these wonderful frogs. I would note that there are several populations of this frog, and it is best that they be kept separate.  One population in the hobby is from Columbia, another from Ecuador, and these are from Peru.

I’ve had a lot of calling and some egg laying.  I haven’t exactly figured out the key to getting them to lay successful clutches, but we’ve had a few good clutches and I’m hoping that we’ll be able to produce a good run of these in 2026.

One tip for being able to see these guys better is to have plenty of open spaces in the tank.  Several pockets of cover combined with open spaces will encourage the frogs to be out and about around their hide areas.  Also,  provide film cans, (breeding sites) in lightly covered areas, for instance put a film can on the back wall of the tank, and allow some vegetation to conceal it but not too much…the males will sit on or around the film can and call even though they are somewhat in the open.
