D. Tinctorius “Azureus” Form, Large Juveniles

$50.00

These blue Dart Frogs are one of the earliest dart frogs to make their way into the hobby, interesting since they were only “discovered” by western scientists in the late 1960s.  However they are a mainstay of the dart frog hobby, and have been being kept and bred in the United States since the 80’s.  It is hard to over exaggerate their beauty, these frogs are iconic terrarium frogs!

Please don’t purchase tinctorius and expect to keep them together in groups!  We are happy to help you work through the issues of keeping tinctorius, generally the solution is to purchase a sexed pair, rather than juveniles.

We work with several pairs of these amazing dart frogs, if you are interested in diverse bloodlines we can help.

Status- We regularly produce these, and generally have a few juveniles and usually some sexed pairs as well!

Imagine coming across this frog in the wild! A blue frog, or many blue frogs, hopping about in their habitat….must be a magical sight. Azureus occur in a small habitat on the Sipaliwini savanah, near the border of Brazil and Surinam. An exploratory expedition to this region in 1968 found these amazing frogs populating the pockets of rainforest scattered across this otherwise unlikely habitat (the savannah is much too dry and open for dart frogs).  Fortunately, the remote area these frogs are found in has protected them, and their population is apparently stable in the wild!

They were originally considered a new species, Dendrobates azureus, but since then, they have been re-classified as one of many different “morphs” of Dendrobates tinctorius. They are definitely tinctorius, and have all the classic traits of tinctorius, including the fact that they don’t do well in groups, or at least one must be very cautious when keeping them in groups.  Females are typically the instigators of squabbles, and do not tolerate other females in “their” territory. Care should be exercised when trying to raise or keep these frogs together until you know the gender of your frogs!!

Become familiar with these frogs’ territorial nature before ordering them! You can read more about these issues here.
