This is one of those “holy grail” or must have dart frogs for some collectors! A very unusual appearing tinctorius, and very beautiful! This frog is fairly new in the hobby, and there is some controversy regarding their origins and presence in the hobby. I’ve written a brief explanation of the situation with these frogs below, please check it out. If you still have questions, feel free to drop me a note!
Briefly though, these frogs are produced from legally imported frogs (imported from Europe), and the parents of my parent stock were produced in zoos in Europe. The zoo stock may consist of animals which were seized, while being illegally imported into Europe, although I do not know this for sure, but it is a safe bet that this is the case, since the native population of these frogs exists in a national park in Brazil, where it would not be possible to export them from. However, there is information that indicates that they may also range into areas well outside of this park, and possibly extend into neighboring French Guiana. (I believe French Guiana also prohibits export of it’s animals as well)
Brazil has a long standing policy of not allowing any animal exports, ergo any frog or animal that is native to Brazil, but found outside of Brazil, would be considered (by Braziil) to be illegal. However I cannot help but point out that Brazil is very busy cutting down Amazon rainforest, as well as flooding large tracts of forest as they create hydro electric dams. Gold mining and other illegal destruction of the rainforest habitat is wild spread in Brazil. Bottom line is that frogs removed from Brazil are stranded, and offspring they produce are no more “illegal” than any other tinctorius, in particular since, according to CITES and scientific definition, they are just a dendrobates tinctorius, the law doesn’t recognize “morphs” or locale forms.
