Introducing our Male Orange and White Stripe Gargoyle Gecko (G26), a vibrant specimen hatched in September 2021. This gecko boasts striking orange and white striping, inheriting the vivid coloration from its parents: Clementine (female orange stripe) and King Billy (male orange stripe). As of late August, G26 weighs a healthy 23 grams and thrives on a diet of crickets and Repashy, ensuring optimal health and growth.
Species Overview:
Gargoyle Geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) are native to the southern end of New Caledonia’s main island. They are renowned for their unique cranial structures, resembling gargoyles, and their diverse color patterns, including stripes and blotches. These geckos are nocturnal and arboreal, favoring forested habitats where they can climb and hide among the foliage.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Gargoyle Geckos typically reach a snout-to-vent length (SVL) of 4 to 4.5 inches, with a total length of up to 8 inches.
- Coloration: This gecko exhibits a vibrant orange and white stripe pattern, a trait selectively bred for its aesthetic appeal.
- Tail: Unlike some gecko species, Gargoyle Geckos can regenerate their tails if lost, a trait that adds to their resilience.
Temperament:
Gargoyle Geckos are known for their docile nature, making them suitable for both novice and experienced reptile enthusiasts. Regular, gentle handling can further enhance their comfort with human interaction.
Care Requirements:
- Enclosure: A single adult should be housed in a minimum 20-gallon tank with a secure screen top. Vertical space is essential to accommodate their climbing behavior.
- Humidity: Maintain humidity levels between 60-75%, achieved through regular misting and a shallow water dish. Monitoring with a hygrometer is recommended.
- Diet: A balanced diet includes commercially prepared fruit-based gecko diets (like Repashy) and appropriately sized live insects, such as crickets. Calcium supplementation is crucial to prevent metabolic bone disease.
Health and Longevity:
With proper care, Gargoyle Geckos can live between 15 to 20 years, offering a long-term companionship for reptile keepers. Regular health checks and maintaining optimal husbandry practices are essential to ensure their well-being.
Genetic Lineage:
G26 descends from a distinguished lineage:
- Dam (Mother): Clementine – Female Orange Stripe
- Sire (Father): King Billy – Male Orange Stripe
This pedigree contributes to G26’s exceptional coloration and genetic vigor.
