Provide your larger dart frogs with the perfect food source: two large 32 oz Hydei flightless fruit fly cultures. These freshly set-up cultures are prepared on the day you place your order, ensuring maximum potential for successful production. Please note that these cultures will require approximately 18–20 days before they begin hatching and producing flies for feeding.
What Are Hydei Fruit Flies?
Hydei fruit flies are a larger species of flightless fruit fly, ideal for terrestrial dart frogs over half-grown, as well as other reptiles and invertebrates, such as young chameleons, small tree frogs, hatchling mantids, and tarantulas. These flies are not suitable for smaller dart frogs, such as thumbnails or pumilio species, as they are too large for them to consume.
Why Freshly Set-Up Cultures?
Hydei fruit fly culturing can be less predictable than that of Melanogaster (Turkish Gliders), and shipping developed cultures often results in failure. By offering freshly set-up cultures, we maximize the likelihood of success. These cultures are prepared using the same methods we use for our own dart frog collection and typically produce a large number of flies around the 20-day mark when kept in appropriate conditions.
Important Notes
- Not Immediately Ready to Feed: These cultures require approximately 18–20 days to begin producing flies. Plan accordingly to ensure your frogs have a continuous food supply.
- No Producing Cultures Available: Due to past negative experiences with shipping developed Hydei cultures, we do not offer them for sale.
Feeding Your Dart Frogs
Hydei fruit flies are an excellent choice for larger dart frogs, but they are not recommended for smaller species. If you are new to dart frog care, we recommend reviewing our guides on dart frog food and fruit fly culturing to ensure the best results.
