These little “dwarf” cobalts are super nice dart frogs, typical tinctorius but in a smaller package! Only about half the size of the larger forms of tinctorius, such as regular cobalts and other larger tinctorius, but still the same basic frogs. Their smaller size allows for a somewhat smaller terrarium, and these are well suited for a twenty gallon aquarium or an 18 x 18 size Exo Terra or similar, but if you are in a pinch, a pair of these could be fine in a ten gallon. The nice bright yellow on these frogs is an inherent trait, and not due to supplementation or diet.
These frogs were common in the hobby in the 90’s and called Dwarf Cobalts or sometimes “nominate”, although this is not a correct use of the term. Today more attention is placed on giving dart frogs common names that reflect the original habitat where they are found, so many frogs that were once given a generic name like “Dwarf Cobalts” are now labeled as something specific like “Kaw Mountain”. Kaw Mountain is located within a range of hills, reaching only a few hundred feet above sea level. The range of hills runs for about twenty miles, between the small village of Kaw and the village of Roura, not too far from the Atlantic coast of French Guiana. There are several forms of small tinctorius that are found in this general area, these Kaw Mountain, obviously, as well as a similar form found near, and named for, the village Roura. Then at the southern end of the “mountains”, near the Oyapok river a couple of more small forms are found. It is interesting to me that several forms of tintorius occupy this small area, and all are very similar in size, and are some of the smallest tinctorius known.
The frogs being offered are around 10 to 12 months of age. This form is fairly easy to sex at a younger age, and the frogs are not quite ready to breed, but are around two thirds grown. The pictures are the exact frogs you will receive. There is some variation in these of course but they are all showing that nice bright yellow pattern on the back, and the deep blue markings on the legs. We provide a bit more detailed information about tinctorius in general here.
