LECA clay pellets are commonly used as a substrate in hydroponics. They are also commonly used in terrariums as the underlaying drainage substrate.   One gallon will fill a ten gallon aquarium to about two inches in depth.
We suggest using it as a bottom layer, with gravel over it. However if you wish to use a forest floor substrate, this is one of the best underlying substrates. In either case a fiberglass insect screen should be placed between the finer substrate and the LECA.
