A. galactonotus morphs
Adelphobates galactonotus, commonly called the splash-back poison frog, is native to the rainforests of the Brazilian Amazon. In the wild they carry skin toxins as a defense against predators, but captive-bred animals raised on a domestic diet are completely harmless to handle.
These are medium-sized dart frogs, reaching about an inch and a half as adults. They come in striking color morphs — solid orange, red, and yellow forms — all with jet-black undersides and legs. The contrast makes them one of the most visually dramatic species in the hobby.
Galactonotus are a great choice for newer keepers. They are hardy, tolerate a range of vivarium conditions, and breed readily in captivity. They do well in groups and are bolder than many dart frog species, often visible during the day foraging on the vivarium floor. They prefer temperatures in the upper seventies to low eighties with high humidity, and appreciate both floor space and low vegetation to climb.
