D. auratus morphs

Dendrobates auratus, the green-and-black poison frog, is one of the most widespread dart frogs in Central and South America, ranging from Nicaragua through Colombia. Like all dart frogs, wild-caught animals carry skin toxins derived from their diet of ants and mites, but captive-bred auratus are non-toxic and safe to keep.

Auratus are a medium-sized species and one of the best starter dart frogs. They are hardy, forgiving of beginner mistakes, and adapt well to a variety of vivarium setups. Most morphs are fairly bold and will spend time out in the open once established in their enclosure.

The species shows remarkable color variation across its range. Morphs include combinations of green, blue, bronze, black, and even white patterning. Each locale produces a distinct look, so collectors often keep several morphs. They do well in groups, breed without too much difficulty, and are generally available in the hobby.
