Thumbnail Frogs
Thumbnail frogs are the miniatures of the dart frog world. Species in genera like Ranitomeya typically max out at 15-20mm — small enough to sit comfortably on your thumbnail, which is how the group got its name.
What they lack in size they make up for in color, behavior, and personality. Many thumbnail species display vivid patterns of red, orange, yellow, and black. They are active and engaging to watch, with complex social behaviors including biparental care — both parents participate in transporting and raising tadpoles. Males are often vocal with surprisingly loud calls for their size.
Their small stature makes them ideal for nano vivariums and desktop setups. A well-planted 10-gallon tank can comfortably house a pair. They prefer slightly warmer temperatures than some larger dart frogs (mid-to-upper seventies) with high humidity and plenty of leaf litter and small bromeliads. Most thumbnail species are best suited for keepers with some dart frog experience, as their small size makes them more sensitive to husbandry errors. Like all captive-bred dart frogs, they are non-toxic and harmless.
