Peacock form D. tinctorius, Large Juveniles

$145.00

Perhaps the most spectacular form of Dendrobates tinctorius, these Peacock tincs are super stars! Showstoppers in the terrarium, and while not the easiest tinctorius form, once you have an established pair in a terrarium, they are breed readily!

This is one of those “holy grail” or must have dart frogs for some collectors!  A very unusual appearing tinctorius, and very beautiful! These are a more difficult form of tinctorius, although overall they are not too complicated.  The main thing is that they are a bit more flighty. They require a little more space, and a more thickly planted terrarium. Overall it is hard to put my finger on what they want, it is just that less of these frogs thrive, compared to another type of tinctorius.  In most ways though, we’ve got you covered there, since our well started juveniles are fat and robust on arrival…you’ll definitely want to raise them in larger individual setups! Or go for a sexed pair, and have your terrarium ready for them, just put a breeding hut in the tank! These frogs will do best in a larger tank, 20 gallon minimum for a pair of these guys.
You may have noticed, there is a bit of controversy surrounding these frogs. This is a long and complicated subject, and beyond the scope of this little article on these frogs.  Briefly though, this form of tinctorius occurs a national park in Brazil. Brazil doesn’t allow any export of wildlife, thus, in the eyes of Brazil, these frogs are illegal.
However, the founding stock of the frogs in the US are frogs which are produced from legally imported frogs (imported from Europe), and the parents of my parent stock were produced in zoos in Europe.  The zoo stock apparently consisted of animals which were seized, as they were being smuggled illegally into Europe. Seized animals being turned over to a zoo is not an unusual situation, and once the zoo begins breeding them, the offspring can eventually wind up in the hands of the public, or dart frog hobbyists in Europe.  since the native population of these frogs exists in a national park in Brazil. (However there is information that indicates that they may also range into areas well outside of this park, and possibly extend into neighboring French Guiana).

Brazil has a long standing policy of not allowing any animal exports, ergo any frog or animal that is native to Brazil, but found outside of Brazil, would be considered (by Braziil) to be illegal. However I cannot help but point out that Brazil is very busy cutting down Amazon rainforest, as well as flooding large tracts of forest as they create hydro electric dams. Bottom line is that frogs removed from Brazil are stranded, and offspring they produce are no more “illegal” than any other tinctorius, in particular since, according to CITES and scientific definition, they are just a dendrobates tinctorius. These are well started juveniles, typically over one inch in length.
