La Coca Form D. Auratus, Large Juveniles

$150.00

We are offering these La Coca form dendrobates auratus for sale, our captive bred frogs are perfect for your next breeding project!  Saurian is the primary source for these frogs, we are working with several breeding groups of these that were imported from Europe in 2022. These La Coca form Dendrobates auratus are probably the most exciting new form of auratus I’ve seen in many years!  Amazing appearance, and a bold and outgoing nature are two of their best qualities!

These are a larger form of auratus, in fact one of the larger auratus I’ve seen.  Their color ranges from a light green to blue, with beautiful lighter colored bronze between the main colors, a trait that becomes more pronounced as they get older. Between their large size, bold nature and beautiful appearance, these are pretty close to a perfect dart frog!

As with most any auratus, they will breed and do well in both groups and pairs.  Great beginner dart frogs!

Status- As of March 2026, these are breeding well for us, and we have four groups producing juveniles. However, demand has been great, and the next juveniles are probably not going to be available until May.  Please inquire!

Origin and Status in the Hobby
The La Coca form of auratus is found on the Pacific coast of Panama.  This new locality showed up in the US in 2022 roughly.  These remarkable frogs are one of the more beautiful forms of auratus I’ve seen, and check all the boxes for me, in terms of a desirable form of auratus, in that they are large, highly variable, beautiful, and quite visible in the terrarium.
Unusual Coloration!
They also share a trait that is seen in some forms of auratus, but not many other types of dart frogs, which is that they display ontogenetic coloration changes, or to put it in plain English, they change appearance through their lifespan.  The primary manifestation of this is that the bronze or brown areas between the green or bluish coloration lightens as they age.
We haven’t had these La Coca in captivity long enough to know how this will turn out in the end, but in some other forms of auratus this can be dramatic, with the lighter areas turning a creamy white or light bronze color.  Time will tell, but juveniles will definitely be darker colored than the adults they will turn into.  The green coloration will also change in some of them, and occasional specimens turn out a bit bluish.
Breeding Tips
So far, they have bred for me relatively easily, so despite being somewhat pricey and rare at this point, they are still a great beginner frog. One thing I’ve noted is that they did seem to take a little bit longer after maturity to begin breeding. This is a little unusual for auratus dart frogs in particular, since generally dendrobates auratus are fast to get started.  Overall though, this is an easily bred dart frog that should bring you a lot of enjoyment in your terrarium!
